I was invited by Perro Libre to take part in the APL Cidades project, in which illustrators from several Brazilian capitals were invited to create an illustration for a special edition of their American Pale Lager. I was very excited to develop this project and see it become a reality.
The illustration was inspired by the legend of the witches of Florianópolis, something deeply rooted in the city’s culture and responsible for its nickname, “Magic Island.” Unlike the stereotypical image of witches with hooked noses, pointed hats, and broomsticks, the witches of Florianópolis are believed to blend into society as ordinary women. According to the legend, when spotted, they can transform into birds or butterflies (without ceasing to be witches).
In general, it is believed that these witches arrived in Florianópolis during the Azorean colonization period, fleeing persecution in Europe by ship. All of this inspired a reinterpretation of the legend through an illustration that aimed to move away from traditional fairy-tale witch clichés and instead embrace a more modern and mystical aesthetic.

Fui convidado pela cervejaria Perro Libre para participar do projeto APL Cidades, em que ilustradores de diversas capitais do país deveriam criar uma ilustração para estampar a edição especial da American Pale Lager deles. Fiquei muito feliz de poder desenvolver esse projeto e vê-lo se tornar realidade!
A ilustração foi inspirada na lenda das bruxas de Florianópolis, algo intrínseco à cultura da cidade e que originou o apelido de Ilha da Magia. As bruxas de Florianópolis não tem aquele estereótipo de bruxa nariguda, com chapéu pontudo e vassoura. O grande trunfo delas é que não sabemos quem são, pois elas estão camufladas na sociedade como mulheres normais, e que, ao serem avistadas, podem se transformar em passarinhos ou borboletas, não deixando de serem bruxas.
De uma forma geral, acredita-se que as bruxas vieram para Florianópolis na época da colonização açoriana, de navio, fugindo das perseguições na Europa. Tudo isto motivou fazer uma releitura da lenda através de uma ilustração que buscasse fugir dos clichês tradicionais de bruxa dos contos de fadas, para clichês mais modernos e místicos.
